Pluizuit: 'Dit is hilariteit ten top!

30/08/2011 A magic wind over Paris

A brand new picture book commissioned by the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. Quel vento magico a Parigi! is published on the occasion of the exhibition GLI ANNI FOLLI. La Parigi di Modigliani, Picasso e Dalí. 1918-1933,  from 11 September 2011 until 8 January 2012.

Italian author Luigi Dal Cin and Belgian illustrator Klaas Verplancke created a magical travelogue through more then 20 famous artworks that will be shown in the exhibition. A flight through Paris in the roaring Twenties and the artistic minds of icons such as Modigliani, Picasso, Duchamp, Léger, Chagall, Mondriaan and Mirò.
Paris in the Twenties was the scene of some of the most startling and radical artistic provocations of the Twentieth Century. The moral and cultural conventions of bourgeois society were the target at which the Dadaist creations of Picabia, Duchamp, Arp and Man Ray took aim in a spirit that was ironic, rebellious and iconoclastic. The dream of a better world, and at the time, premonitions of another war, were embodied in the paintings and sculptures of Ernst, Miró, Masson, Magritte, Tanguy, Giacometti and Dalí, with their dreamlike and disturbing imagery, like windows opening onto marvels that invite the breaking of all inhibitions and reawaken desires and the imagination.

Quel vento magico a Parigi! is a colorful, imaginative and exclusive exhibition guide for children, only available through Ferrara Arte Editore and in selected Italian bookstores. Order your copy here.

03/06/2011 Timo and the Magical Picture Book for iPhone & iPod touch

'Overall this book is fabulous. The story is truly original with beautiful hand drawn illustrations - the kind with so much great detail that you notice more and more with re-reading. The animation & interactivity are also very engaging but not in a way that distracts from the story. It even makes a great bedtime read. So if you're looking for a book your child will come back to over and over, this one is not only a sure bet, but also one adults will enjoy.'

25/02/2011 Musical artwork

Fremdtunes is a Dutch independent music label & publisher. The main focus is on instrumental producer-based music, from triphop to dub to rare groove to hiphop, from funkjazz and skweee to electro and turntablism. Danceable music with beats that move both the crowd and critics.
Fremdtunes was initiated by Rogier van Hout (’s-Hertogenbosch) and Neels Smeekens (Rotterdam). These gentlemen combine over 30 years of experience as producers/DJ’s (as DJ Mace and DJ Optimus) in the hiphop-, beats- and jazzscene. Two alchemists who hover between composition and decompostion.
The result of their first musical cooperation as OPTIMACE will be released on April 11th 2011 (digital) and April 18th (vinyl): the EP USED FUTURE is a playful mixture of beats, jazz, fusion and soundscapes. The artwork of this release is done by Klaas Verplancke (concept & painting) and Mister Adam (graphic design).

04/02/2011 'Applesauce' twice nominated for best book in Flemish children’s literature

The nominations for the Boekenleeuw (Book Lion) and the Boekenpauw (Book Peacock) are announced. The Book Lion is awarded to the author of the best children's or youth book. The Book Peacock is awarded to the illustrator of the best illustrated children's or youth book. Applesauce is nominated for both prizes.

The winners will be given their award on Wednesday, 23 February 2011, thus announcing the start of the Jeugdboekenweek (the Week of Juvenile Literature).

From the Book Lion jury report:
'Applesauce is a welcome and refreshing change to the many children’s pictures books in which dads are mere heroes. Klaas Verplancke portrays fathers as they really are: very often they live up to the superdad expectations but every now and then, they are lazybones, their faces spelling thunderstorm, their arms being flashes of lightning.
There is not a word too much or too little in this story. Verplancke’s words are well-chosen and he plays with them as if they were a child’s building blocks. The applesauce is depicted so beautifully you can smell and taste it. Delicious!'

From the Book Peacock jury report:
'In his ode to ‘superdad’, Klaas Verplancke strikes the perfect balance between what is being said and being shown. Applesauce tells us about Janneman, whose sweet, strong, smooth father makes the best applesauce in the world. When dad gets mad, however, the warm atmosphere changes. Janneman suddenly has to push his way through the Wicked Daddy Woods, searching for a new, loving dad. Throughout his quest, the metamorphoses of various characters beautifully portray Janneman’s chaotic emotions. Klaas Verplancke does magic tricks with tints and shades colouring seamlessly the moods and bendings in the story. From beginning to end, Applesauce is a flawless embodiment of both a child’s sudden desolation as the loving warmth of newfound father.'
